Dangers of Second Hand Heat Pumps

To TradeMe or Not To TradeMe?

If you go on TradeMe right now you will find heaps of listings for second hand heat pumps. Some have been removed from earthquake damaged properties in Christchurch, while others have been switched out during renovations or upgrades.

You know that little voice in your head that says, “That seems way too cheap! Can that be right?” When it comes to second hand heat pumps, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is!

Does The Heat Pump Work?

Buying a second hand heat pump isn’t like buying a used car. You can’t take it for a test drive or ask your mechanic to have a look at it. The only way to be sure a second hand heat pump works is to have it installed… which is too late to know whether or not you have bought a dud.

Did you see the heat pump working where it was originally installed in Christchurch? If you’re buying a used heat pump off TradeMe, the answer is probably no…

How Was The Heat Pump Removed?

Installing and uninstalling heat pumps is a tricky business, which is why heat pump manufacturers recommend you choose an accredited installer. Who installed the heat pump in the first place? Did an accredited heat pump installer perform the salvage and removal?

If the used heat pump is removed and transported improperly, parts can get damaged, gas and coolant can leak out. All of which means the heat pump that worked at the original Christchurch location will no longer work now! Again, you have no way of knowing until it’s too late.

Protect Yourself From Used Heat Pumps

If you’re renovating your Christchurch home and want to move your heat pump to another part of the house, Heat Pumps NOW is happy to help. Because we’re Mitsubishi and Fujitsu accredited heat pump installers, we can uninstall and move your existing heat pump without voiding the warranty.

Warranties do not transfer between owners. Even if the heat pump is less than five years old and still under warranty, you won’t be covered if you buy it second hand! If you have that heat pump installed and there’s an issue, you’ll be left in the cold both figuratively and literally. The manufacturer has no obligation to honour the original warranty.

Heat Pumps NOW’s Experience

Of the second hand heat pumps we’ve installed around Christchurch, we’ve seen around a 90 percent failure rate. That could be down to a number of issues from damaged parts, lack of refrigerant, or just improper removal. We don’t install second hand heat pumps anymore because we have seen too many people get burned.

By the time you have bought a used heat pump on TradeMe and found a Christchurch installer willing to help, you have probably spent around $1500. If there’s a problem, you’ll need to call the heat pump installer back again, and they’ll probably charge a call-out fee because you have no warranty protection on your heat pump. By the time you’ve bought another “cheap” second hand heat pump and had it installed, you’ve spent as much as you would have done on a brand new heat pump with a minimum 5-year warranty and 1-year labour guarantee.

If you’re looking on TradeMe for a used heat pump in Christchurch and you think the prices look too good to be true, it’s because they probably are. the installer should give advise to the client specially when they know that it is second hand pump. Anyways, before using a second hand heat pump one should make a research first, it is important they will be able to see articles like this one to give them insight about the matter. Stay safe always.
