Who would have thought the mighty All Blacks could be beaten, ending their world record international winning streak! And by Ireland of all teams? Surprisingly, the All Blacks gained an additional victory moments after their defeat. Stoic All Blacks coach Steve Hansen gave credit where credit was due. “People will say ‘Oh, you were missing two locks,’ but we haven’t got any excuses. We were just beaten by a better side on the day. That happens when you play good sides. And we’ve been saying for quite some time they’re a good team.” No blaming. No finger pointing. No wringing hands in despair and complaining about the upset. Games have always been decided by the better team on the day. On that day Ireland was the superior team, and the All Blacks had no trouble recognizing it. Christchurch has a large Irish population helping rebuild our city, and once we had gotten over the initial shock it was easy to celebrate their win with them.
