If heat pumps are a fairly big investment for a Christchurch household, whole home ducted heating systems are even more so. With any big household purchase, it’s important you get the right advice from someone who is patient, willing to sit with you, understand you, and work with you. The Start Of Your Ducted JourneyCameron and Ashley are fairly new, and very proud homeowners. They’ve been living in their Christchurch home for just over a year, which has given them time to discover all the things about their house that a real estate agent wouldn’t tell you. “We’ve got a standard three-bedroom home in Mairehau, and we love it,” says Cameron. “It’s a great first home that we were really lucky to get.” From the nice area, to their spacious backyard and friendly neighbours, there are very few downsides to their Christchurch home. “The lounge gets all the afternoon sun in summer, which is fantastic. In winter, we’d close all the doors and crank the heat pump in the living room, which does an excellent job. The problem was going to bed later in the evening. The lounge was warm and toasty, but the hallway and bedrooms were freezing,” says Cameron. After seeing Heat Pumps NOW’s video about Alex and his ducted system, Ashley and Cameron thought a ducted system would be a good idea for their home too. As it wasn’t urgent, they put the idea on the back burner. It’s one matter for adults to feel a bit cold heading out into the hallway. It’s another matter entirely for a baby. Making A Ducted Decision“In May we found out Ashley was pregnant,” says Cameron. “Of course we were excited, but we realised we couldn’t put a baby to sleep in a cold nursery. That put the pressure on us to do something about a ducted system.” Blair Ashdowne from Heat Pumps NOW came out to have a look around Cameron and Ashley’s home. He saw they had a good ceiling cavity to install the central heat pump and all the ducts connecting each room. Blair designed a custom solution for their three bedroom home, and gave Cameron and Ashley a rough idea of how much a ducted system would cost. “We saw a ducted system as an investment for our home. One that would add value, as giving us the whole home heating solution we were looking for,” says Cameron. “We couldn’t afford it right away, and we explained this to Blair. Getting him in early gave us an idea of what we needed, and gave us a target to save for.” Revisiting The Ducted System IdeaFast-forwarding to the end of the year, Ashley and Cameron got back in touch with Heat Pumps NOW to say they’re ready to go ahead with the install. “I came back to their house to confirm nothing had changed, I explained the installation process to them, and then I sent through our official quote,” says Blair. Over two days, the team from Heat Pumps NOW installed the central heat pump, connected it to the outdoor unit, and cut holes in the ceiling for all ducted air vents to supply hot or cold air. “Those guys were great about explaining what they were doing, and keeping us in the loop. They were always polite and respectful. I also understood it was a messy job, but they were very good at vacuuming up and taking all the rubbish away with them,” Cameron says.
“The main push for getting the ducted system was heating the whole home in winter for when the baby arrives,” says Cameron. “But having it working over summer was amazing. It’s quiet, and it cooled the house down enough for us to get a decent sleep on those really hot nights.” “We understand ducted systems can be a big financial commitment, so we’ll never put the pressure on anyone to sign the dotted line. In fact, we’ll give you everything you need to make an informed decision, knowing it may be months before you can come back with confirmation. We’re ok with that, and we’ll work with you,” says Blair. Are you interested in a ducted system, but aren’t ready to have one installed right away?
